Geocache Description:

The cache is just past the sand mine at Lochaline, close to the ferry that runs between Lochaline and Fishnish on the Isle of Mull.

Small lock n lock type box containing log book, pencils and a few trade items. If you have to wait for the next ferry from Lochaline or are staying on Mull, this cache can be reached after a 15 to 20 minute walk from the car parking near the Lochaline ferry terminal. Just past the car park note the ventilation grill in the cliff. On a hot day the air exiting the mine is beautifully cool and refreshing and can be felt many yards away. Carry on along the waymarked path which takes you past the sand mine and harbour. Here there is a lot of sand laying around and you can see how very white and fine it is.
The mine supplies high quality silica sand to the glass, ceramics and industrial chemical industries. The origins of the mine date back to 1940 when the production of sand commenced for use in optical lenses during the second world war.

Special thanks to Philip for kindly looking after this cache.
