Geocache Description:

Generally flat walking on made-up surface but tree cover might hamper readings.

First in a series of caches on a circular route of about 1.9 miles leading to a bonus cache. Each cache can be logged individually and may give a clue to the bonus. The Caches are hidden in Park Wood, Hellingly, near Hailsham.
There is a small car park with parking for about 8 cars and no other safe nearby parking is available, so parking may be difficult at certain times. Car park co-ordinates are N 50 53.539 E 00 15.863.
Park wood is used by many walkers, especially those with dogs. Harvey and Ziggy our cache hounds love playing in these woods, which are especially pretty at the moment with carpets of wild flowers and song birds and woodpeckers. Parts of the route may be muddy at any time of year, so suitable footwear is recommended.
It consists of 60 hectares of ancient semi-natural woodland and is a designated Site of Nature Conservation Importance, so please keep to the footpaths and avoid trampelling the flowers or scaring the wildlife, all the caches are or will be placed close to thefootpaths.
Park Wood was originally part of the Forest of Anderida which covered most of south-east England in Saxon times. During the Second World War the Canadian Army occupied the wood, and it was a no-go area for civilians.

The East Sussex River Board bought the land in 1951 and made faggots from the native sweet chestnuts for riverbank protection work. After a few decades without woodland management, the Environment Agency took it over. East Sussex County Council has managed the wood since 1996.

Please do not move this cache. We have had problems doing maintenance where some people have been moving caches. If you find the need to move it for reasons other than you think the coordinates are wrong please tell us so that we can then place it where we think is suitable. We have checked these coordinates with 2 different GPS devices and they seem to be about right.Remember different devices will give slightly different readings under tree cover.
