This is a quick stop and log exactly where you would think and the coordinates should be close to dead-on so you shouldn’t need to search too much.
This is the dreaded watertight match container in a very predictable spot but it was put here for travelers who can’t afford to spend an hour hunting for a cache. There is plenty of room to park off the highway in the wayside, with seasonal restrooms.
** As of May 15, 2009 the cache is temporarily located on the north side of the highway until ODOT replaces the cracked post on the south side. The coordinates listed above are for the revised location. **
This wayside offers spectacular views of Mount Thielsen year round. Please post your photos of the mountain to show the view during the different seasons. Depending on the season the cache and parking area may not be available depending on the snow depth.
Mount Thielsen is an extinct stratovolcano in southern Oregon that has been so deeply eroded by glaciers that there is no summit crater and the upper part of the mountain is more or less a horn. Thielsen's spire-like top is hit by lightning so often that some of its summit rocks have melted into a rare mineraloid called lechatelierite or fulgurite, and the mountain itself has earned the nickname "the lightning rod of the Cascades."
