I've been thinking about this cache for a while now and have
finally gotten around to placing it.
The cache is located in a place called Hidden Valley.
Hidden Valley, a substantial mountain bowl, was for centuries a
favored hunting ground for Indians, trappers and the early
pioneers. Populations of Rocky Mountain sheep, deer, elk and other
game animals used the area for spring forage or relief from the
heat of the summer. (source: Forest Service web site)
To start off, park at the 22nd Street trail head. Make your way
up Indian Trail. When you reach N 41° 13.941' W111° 55.345' there
should be a trail that branches off to the right and goes up hill,
this is Hidden Valley Trail.
The trail is fairly steep, but well defined. The cache is almost
exactly 2 miles up along the trail and you gain about 1700-ish feet
during the hike. There is also a good resting place about half way
up, where you can catch your breath and take in the view.
The container is a half sized ammo box in it's original olive
drap paint.
If you have the time (and the energy) try to keep going up the
trail. Just a little further and you reach the end. There you will
find an amazing view of Taylor's Canyon and Mt. Ogden Peak. It's a
great area for meditation.
Oh, and bring water, you'll need it.
Edit: 20 June, 2005. It seems that the trail people have decided
that it is necessary that a new trail be created that leads up to
the half-way point. This new trail, in my opinion, is
completely unnecessary and only serves to remove the
challenge of hiking up the canyon.
If you desire to challenge yourself and truly earn the right to
sit at the top of Hidden Valley, then I urge you to take the old
trail. The fork is at N 41° 13.889' by W 111° 55.384'. Take the
trail on your right.
