Heard the term and not know what it means? Seen suspicious youngsters (or oldsters) scouring the ground in a local park, leaning over a guard rail, or climbing light poles at Wal-mart -- and maybe picking up litter as they go? Do your friends share adventure stories about going to a place they didn't even know existed? Come, learn about Geocaching, a hi-tech, world-wide, family-friendly, Easter-Egg-Hunt style outdoor game/sport/hobby.
The presentation will start at 10:00 AM at the Main Branch downtown,
915 Monroe Street, Huntsville AL 35801
(256) 532-5940.
Afterwards, there will be a short cache run to find a handful of "practice" caches and a couple of "real" caches on the library grounds .
The major topics to be covered include:
• Brief history of the Global Positioning System
• Description of Geocaching
• How to hide a cache
• How to find a cache
• What to take with you
• Using a GPS to find a cache
• Logging your adventures
With so many brands and models of GPS units on the market, there is insufficient class time to teach you how to use your own GPS. You are encouraged to bring one - or a smart phone that is GPS-enabled.
The presentation is open to geocachers of all levels – and even non-geocachers! Experienced cachers are invited to attend and share stories of caching adventures, cool containers, challenging challenges, essential TOTT, and caches that received a Favorite Point.
