Until last week I was unaware of the Indians Head but thanks to
some information from other cachers, thanks Dave and Alistair, I
have been able to see it for myself and thought it worthy of a
cache.
There are a couple of stories about the Head, both of which,
suppose it was placed there in the early 1800's. The first tells
that a French Prisoner of war, held in Dartmoor Prison, placed it
there while the other says it was put in place in the 1830 while
repairs to the leat were being carried out. I am not convinced by
the stories, although it would be nice to think either of them were
true.
I find it difficult to understand why there is no mention of the
Head in any of the "Classic" Dartmoor Guide Books, the story only
appeared in print less than 30 years ago.
When and however it was placed will probably be another of the
Moors mysteries and it is well worth a visit for that reason alone.
The Head does have some damage to it but the face and headdress can
still be clearly seen.
The cache is hidden down the bank from the leat in an area of
tinners workings. It is hidden in a natural hole at the base of a
thorn tree, there's a spoiler picture if you get stuck.
