Bear Watch Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Team Rampant Lion: Went to check this out and could not find it myself. In fact the fallen tree it was hidden under is gone (decomposed) as well except for a few pieces. I am not planning to replace this cache.

Geocache Description:

VERY IMPORTANT: This is a Wildlife Management Area and hunters are present during all active seasons - wear orange. If you plan to search for this cache alone, please make sure someone knows where you are going.

Ok, unlike several of my other caches there have, as of yet, been no bear sightings near this cache. I gave it this name because the final location overlooks the area where Wrecked Jeep is located and probably 50% of the people who have gone to look for that cache have come across a bear. (PS - If you know how to behave, it is no big deal if you do meet one of our furrier residents unless you've dressed as a large berry).

There are two ways into this cache. If you are doing the Sparta Edison circuit, you can hike up from Wrecked Jeep. If you want to try a different route, park here [N41 04.388; W074 32.434]. At the end of a residential street, there is a WMA entrance - see pic. From here it is a really neat and enjoyable hike up (yes - UP) to the cache location.

The cache is a large, 50 cal ammo can. I placed it when there was deep snow and it appeared to be a decent hiding spot. But as I walked away, I thought as the snow melted, it's cover might give it away a little easier than I intended. I'll watch the logs so please let me know.

If you've got a little extra time, explore the area to the west of the cache. Some cool rock formations but watch the drops.

IMPORTANT NOTES. This cache hunt involves some steep climbs. A lot of loose rocks and branches require constant attention. Likely not a suitable hike for children or those with bad knees (like me). Also be aware that Sussex County New Jersey has many bears and poisonous snakes. Be alert! If you know what to do if you have an encounter, you will enjoy exploring one of the greatest natural resources in Northwest New Jersey.
