This is one of our favorite areas in the CVNR. The terrain is moderate with minimal elevation changes. The cache is stashed off of the trail in an area just before Buttermilk Falls. You may need a compass during late spring and summer when there will be more tree cover. There are plently of open areas to get bearings but the trees may cause some problems (They however add to the beauty of the area). Bring boots along because you will have to cross the creek several times.
The original cache was removed by the Park Service sometime before 6/9/01. All that was left was a sign from the park service indicating the cache had been removed. I have contacted the Park Service to see what their policy will be on Geocaching in the park. I left a message and am awaiting a reponse. You can can contact the Park Service at 800-433-1986, dial 0 and ask to speak with the Park Ranger Supervisor. Hopefully we will be able to come up with a compromise regarding this sport.
We used a Garmin Etrex Summit for the waypoint. We checked the waypoint several times and were within 40 ft (The trees made it a little challenging).
Once you find the cache don't forget to continue on the trail to Buttermilk Falls (the second falls off of the trail). It is a great place for a picture.
