Warning

Please note: To use the services of geocaching.com, you must agree to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.

Located in the Grand Canyon National Park along the South Rim Road and Rim Trail. EXTREME CAUTION SHOULD BE EXERCISED. VERY CLOSE PROXIMITY TO CANYON RIM. DO NOT ATTEMPT DURING DARKNESS.

This virtual cache is a survey disk mounted on a steel pipe exposed several inches above the ground. The disk was placed by the US Department of Agriculture Bureau of Public Roads. It is located very close to the Rim Trail and affords a magnificent view of the Grand Canyon from the area known as The Abyss.

Due to its very close proximity to the rim of the canyon where there is a vertical drop of nearly 3,000', we do not recommend attempting this cache during darkness or with small children.

Access is from the Bright Angel Trailhead area where you can hop on the shuttle bus that makes frequent stops along the South Rim Road and Rim Trail, or you can hike the Rim Trail. The shuttle runs about every 10-15 minutes. We hiked from Hermits Rest to Hopi Point(6 miles +/-) at a leisurely pace. With many stops at spectacular view points it took us 3 hrs.

To verify your find please email the info listed here:

1) What is the elevation stamped on the disk?

2) What is the roadway stationing# stamped on the disk?

Do Not list this in your log. Please email us your answer to the queries. Feel free to post a photo of yourself with the disk and the view. Above all, enjoy the magnificent views and use extra caution along the Rim!

We happened along two other survey discs, but I don't know if we would have come across this one without this cache. By the time we made it down to this part of the trail we were walking on the road because the trail was pretty snowy. I wish I knew how to calibrate my GPS's elevation so that I could have done so at the two elevation discs we found! Thanks for the cache and the fun afternoon on the rim trail!

Nice view from here! We trekked through the snow and found it without any problems. Definitely don't want to look for this one at night! Will send email. #258
