Geocache Description:

Short walk of about 0.75 miles, to find a small cache containing the usual stash of goodies. Can get muddy as the routes leads up a country track. Suggested careful parking at N51°09.704 W002°11.447.

Hill Deverill is one of six villages to be found in the Deverill Valley located on the Wiltshire Downs where the western edge of Salisbury Plain meets Somerset. The word Hill is self explanatory. Deverill on the other hand literally means “diving rill” which quite appropriately describes the rill or stream that runs through the valley which in places disappears underground.

Today if you were to blink as you drive through the village of Hill Deverill you would probably miss it, but in times gone by it was much larger, spreading up the hill to the west. Records show that in the 15th century the village was owned by the Ludlow family well known for their support to the Roundheads during the Civil War and signatories of the death warrant of King Charles I. Further evidence of its previous size is borne by the presence of a Manor House and Church, albeit now secluded private properties.

You can find a lot more information about this fascinating valley at www.wiltshire.gov.uk. Read about how various wars and battles have played an influential part in population sizes and how industrialisation significantly reduced the size of the communities.

Hope you enjoy this short walk in what we think is a beautiful part of our country. If you do, you might like to try our other two nearby caches at Longbridge Deverill and Brixton Deverill. Even further caches have been laid in Kingston Deverill and Monkton Deverill by other members. Enjoy!
