Geocache Description:

Located in a park in the beautiful and historic town of Medora, ND off exit 6 or 7 on Interstate 94.

Medora is a historic town created in the 1880's by a French Nobleman, the Marquis de Mores and named by him for his wife, Medora. In 1883 he built a huge slaughterhouse and meat packing plant, complete with refrigeration (ice in those days) and rail connections. His plan was to slaughter local beef and ship the meat back to the eastern markets. For a variety of reasons the plant only operated for a few years, was abandoned, and was ultimately destroyed in a fire in 1907. The Marquis operated his meat packing operation during the years that Theodore Rooseveldt ran his "Maltese Cross" ranch north of the south unit of todays Theodore Rooseveldt National Park. This makes Medora a very historic area, located in the beautiful North Dakota Badlands. The entrance to the Teddy Rooseveldt National Park South Unit is in the town of Medora!
It is well worth pulling in from I-94 at the Medora exit. Medora is chock full of interesting and historic attractions, including the famous "Medora Musical" which is a professional production playing in a beautiful outdoor amplitheater nightly from the first of June till Labor Day weekend. Don't miss this - it is great! See the numerous museums and educational sites, drive through the beautiful south unit of the National Park and in the future perhaps play a round on the "Bully Pulpit" 18 hole golf course scheduled to be opened next year. And, of course, don't forget to look for the "Frenchman's Folly" geocache!
The cache consists of an ammo can with a logbook, pencils, a Rapala Fish Pen, Luggage tag, Ice Scraper, Toy Mouse, Pair of gun swivels, a Canadian "loonie" dollar coin, a Canadian "toonie" two dollar coin, a Sacagawea Dollar, and some .54 caliber musket balls similar to those used by Lewis and Clarke near here in 1804 & 1806.
Enjoy Medora!
