This cache has been placed near an old mine along the Overland
Corner Heritage Walking Trail.
In 1838 a party of Cornish miners worked at this site for almost a
year. The tunnels you can see here were dug back then, but they
were soon abandoned as the stone did not contain enough minerals
for it to be worth continuing!
The National Trust, which manages this area,
requests that you do not enter the mines but another brochure in
the Hotel just asks you to be careful if you do! I placed
the cache whilst undertaking the 2.8 kilometre Heritage Walk
beginning at the Overland Corner Hotel, but it can be accessed from
the nearby main road and also the Old Coach Road. Other points of
interest along the walk are the quarry
(
GC1FFJK) and the original cemetery. The graves in the cemetery
are from the 1870-80's and include two children's graves. There is
a gravel parking bay on the opposite side of the road, where you
could leave your car if you wanted to join the Heritage Walk at
this point. Further along the Heritage Walk is an ochre mine. Red
and yellow ochre found here was used to to paint the body in
Aboriginal ceremonies.
