This is the Hikin'Guy's classic hike. Colchuck Lake is located in the beautiful Alpine Lakes area. It is a 4.1 mile hike (one-way) and approx. 2200 elevation gain from the trailhead. The trail is rather steep in places. It has to be one of the most scenic hikes and destinations anywhere. Take Icicle Road off of the US2 at the west end of Leavenworth. Then take turn on the Forest Service road 7601 just past Bridge Creek Campground. A 4 mile uphill drive on a dirt and gravel road will get you to the Stuart/Colchuck trailhead (47, 31.549--120, 48.9700- Elevation 3340') You will need a Forest Service pass to park at the trailhead. If you want to spend the night, you will need to stop at the Leavenworth Ranger Station for a permit to camp at the lake.This is a gorgous hike through the trees and along Mountaineer Creek. A little over 2 miles, take a left at the sign that says "Colchuck Lake" (Trail 1599A). The trail steepens at this point. This trail and area are very popular and you will see lots of people on the trail. Make sure to stop at the beautiful waterfall right along the trail (47, 29.907--120, 50.332). You will love Colchuck's glacial green water and great views of Dragontail Peak. The photos pretty much tell the story.You will want to plan a full day to fully enjoy the hike. You will only be able to access this during the summer and early fall due to its high elevation of 5576'. Think of it as a beautiful hike and finding the cache is a bonus. If fact, I would not want anyone to take this hike and come away empty handed. So the clue, pretty much gives it away.
