A Good Place to Cache a Fish! Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

The Hohbillys: This cache was washed away by the mighty Hoh River during the storms of November. We waited to see if the area would stabilize and we could replace the cache. Unfortunately, subsequent storms have almost completely washed away the Willoughby recreational site, which has been since closed. It is with a heavy heart that we archive this cache which was a favorite to so many. It is a place that will only be known to those who have been there in the past. Thanks for the fave's, and the Hohbillys will be back! We are working on a new cache with a new theme close to this location.

Geocache Description:

UPDATED COORDINATES N 47* 49.321 W 124* 11.787 Located at the State of Washington DNR - Willoughby Day Use site. This is the first place on the Upper Hoh Road which offers public access to the Hoh River. Although overnight camping is not allowed, picnic tables and fire pits offer a great place to picnic and try your hand at fishing if you have the gear! Camping is available just a mile on up the road at Minnie Peterson Campground.

The Hoh River has always been a major attraction for sport fishing. Some of the species that are common to the Hoh River are Salmon, Steelhead, Dolly Varden, and Cutthroat Trout. In recent years the Hoh has become a popular Fly Fishing stream, although in past decades drift fishing, or spin-casting was the favored method of fishing. The cache is contained in a fishing tackle box, which is a sort of a gallery of fishing lures from the past, as well as the present. These lures came in a variety of sizes and colors, and were used with different combinations of hook, line, and sinker, as well as sometimes bait. Please do not remove the lures which are displayed in the top tray of the tackle box. A container with a log book and swag is in the bottom of the box. Swag mostly consists of fishing & outdoor related items, including a small box packed with lures for the first-to-find. We have also included an uncirculated 2011 U.S. Olympic National Park series quarter featuring a bull elk standing on a river bar in the Hoh Valley, as well as a Cachekinz Legendary Creatures travel tag.
