This is an easy cache for anyone to get to. It is a micro cache at the memorial to those who perished during the tragedy here in 1990.
While the memorial is to those who perished, take the time to sit for a while in this peaceful hollow and spare a thought for the many other people who were affected by this tragedy. There wouldn’t have been any resident who either didn’t lose a loved one or someone they knew.
For a small community it was such a heavy toll to bear.
A totora tree has been planted just beyond the monument which will eventually provide some shade as it can get hot in this hollow in the summer. As it is basically sand here I ask that when you come to find this cache you bring some water to give the totora a drink and a chance of survival. There is no reticulated water supply in Aramoana (everyone is on tank water) so you will need to bring some water from Dunedin. Every bit will help.
The cache is a micro, hidden at ground level and not visible from and distance. It contains the log and a pencil. It is too small for swaps.
