Geocache Description:

Het Koninklijk Instituut voor de Marine (KIM) is het opleidingsinstituut voor toekomstige officieren van de Nederlandse Koninklijke Marine te Den Helder.

De wapenspreuk van het KIM luid "sumus et fore speramus" wat Latijn is voor: "Wij zijn en hopen te worden."

Het werken bij de operationele eenheden van de Koninklijke Marine stelt specifieke eisen aan de jonge officier. De initiële opleidingen aan het Koninklijk Instituut voor de Marine zijn hier volledig op ingesteld.
Met competentiegericht onderwijs, waarin theorie en praktijk elkaar afwisselen, worden aanstaand Marine-officieren klaargestoomd voor hun loopbaan als militair leider bij Defensie. De opleidingen bestaan uit de unieke combinatie van Maritiem Militaire Opleiding, Vaktechnisch opleiding en persoonsvorming. De militair-wetenschappelijke opleiding bevat tevens Wetenschappelijk onderwijs dat verzorgd wordt door de Faculteit Militaire Wetenschappen.

In totaal volgen bijna 400 toekomstige officieren hun opleiding aan het Koninklijk Instituut voor de Marine. Aan die opleiding dragen 90 militairen en burgermedewerkers bij.

De opleiding tot marineofficier vindt sinds 1854 plaats op de huidige locatie in Den Helder, met uitzicht over de marinehaven.

Hoofdgebouw KIM

Elk jaar in Augustus komt er een "verse" groep mensen naar het KIM om te beginnen aan de gemiddeld 5-jarige opleiding. Deze personen worden na een introductieperiode opgenomen in het Korps Adelborsten, waar alle officieren in opleiding de eerste 3 jaar van hun opleiding lid van zijn.
Activiteiten naast het studeren staan hoog in het vaandel bij de Adelborsten. Deze activiteiten variëren van sport, spel, hobby's en ontspanning tot galafeesten. Eens per jaar wordt het Assaut geörganiseerd, een 3-daags galafeest waar bijna 3 weken aan opbouw aan vooraf gaan. Deze opbouw is deel van de opleiding, omdat Adelborsten zelf de verantwoordelijkheid dragen en de kans krijgen hun leiderschap "skills" te gebruiken/ontwikkelen.

The Royal Netherlands Naval College is the training facility of future officers in the Royal Dutch Navy, Located in the city of Den Helder.

The motto of the RNNC is "sumus et fore speramus" which is Latin for: "We are and hope to become."

Working in the Royal Dutch Navy requires specific skills from young officers. The initial training at the Royal Netherlands Naval College is designed to teach them just those skills.
With competence-oriented education, wherein theoretic and practical studies vary, soon-to-be Naval officers are made ready to start their job as military leaders at the Ministery of Defence. The education is made up of a unique combination of Naval Military Training, Job-Specific Training and personal developement. The military-scientific education also includes Scientific studies, enabling the soon-to-be officer to earn a Bachelor degree. This education is provided by the Faculty of Military Studies.

In total, nearly 400 aspiring officers are educated at this facility. About 90 military personnel and civilian professors teach at the RNNC..

This training has been given at the current location since 1854, with a view over the Naval Base in Den Helder, but has been around since 1815.

Main Building RNNC

Every year in August a "fresh" group of young people come to Den Helder to start their training to become Naval officers. These people are included in the Corps of Midshipmen after the mandatory introduction period. All Midshipmen are members of this Corps for the first 3 years of their training.
Next to studying, activities like sports, games, hobbies and relaxation are very important for the Midshipmen. Once a year a big 3-day gala-party called the Assaut is organised by the Midshipmen. Nearly 3 weeks of building precede this party and is an integral part of the training. The Midshipmen carry the responsibilities themselves and get a chanche to put the learned leadershipskills into practice
