Geocache Description:

The famous engineer and architect of so many of South Africa's most spectacular mountain passes - Sir Thomas Geddes Bain - built the original road between George and Knysna. To span the distance, he had to traverse seven rivers within deep gorges, creating seven unique passes and bridges. This particular bridge was constructed of cast iron in the United Kingdom and then dismantled before being transported by ship to the Cape, where it was loaded on ox carts, trekked to the site and reassembled.

The Seven Passes Road alternates between tarred and gravel sections, but is passable in a normal vehicle under all but the worst weather. Many geocaches can be accessed along this route, and it is a beautiful window onto a less-traveled section of the garden route: bucolic splendor as heifers graze in green pastures alternates with thick indigenous forest (and the chance of spotting a elephant, perhaps...) and soaring Outeniqua Mountains.

The bridge is located near to our family forest hide-away, and as children we would climb it's girders and leap from the top into the pool below (safe to do if you know the spot, but please check the water or ask the locals beforehand). Finding the cache might require you to expand your comfort zone a bit - if muggles appear, hold on a bit and wait for them to pass.

Please be careful not to drop the treasures into the dark waters below, and replace the cache as you've found it.

NB - The terrain to approach the cache site is very, very easy. The last few meters are definitely not. Please be especially cautious in wet conditions.
