From the trailhead on Route 9W follow the co-aligned Timp-Torne trail, marked with blue blazes and the Ramapo-Dunderberg trail marked with a red dot on a white blaze. After about .2 miles the trail passes a 100-foot long masonry tunnel. The Dunderberg Spiral Railway cars were to be pulled up from the river level over the tunnel. The descending leg would pass through the tunnel.
The trail steeply switchbacks up the mountain to a point where the two trails split. Continue to follow the red dot R-D trail. Here you are walking up the incline of the Spiral Railway. At about the 500 foot elevation the trail turns right at another unfinished tunnel, going uphill on a downward loop of the railway. For the adventurous, continue uphill on the incline to N 41 17.208 W 073 57.910. This is the site of the first steam engine, which would have pulled the cars up the mountain. Here the cars switched direction on a big loop where they were then pulled to the top of the mountain. I really wanted to place a cache here but it seemed to violate too many of the State caching regulations, but its worth the trip.
Continue on the red trail passing the In Memory of Bigbill06 cache. GCY0WQ. Follow the R-D trail to GZ. Here on May 11,1967 a single engine plane crashed killing the pilot. The remains are nearby. The cache is a 30 cal ammo can. Please re-hide as well as you found it.
