Geocache Description:

Cache s a plastic lock and lock under a sentinel juniper.

In the early 1880s the Oregon and California Railroad started to tunnel through this mountain using Chinese labor. The tunnel was never completed. In 1887 the Central Pacific took over the failed Oregon and California Railroad. They completed the line over the Siskiyous using a shorter but steeper route to the west near the present I-5. This cache is inside the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument boundry. No motorized vehicles are allowed. Elevation at the parking area is 3199 feet. The cache sits at 3737 feet. The cache is fourty-four yards north (uphill) from the Historical Society Monument (see photo). You won't need a flashlight to explore the tunnel as it is too short and there is plenty of light to find your way. I hiked a loop on the east side of the mountain but couldn't find the opposite side which was started at the same time. That will have to wait for another day, maybe deer season. I have listed a reference point where you should turn left off the road. Follow the trail up the hill. You are almost there.
