Leave it to a born-and-raised southwesterner to make what is
officially is the most southwesterly cache in the continental
United States of America. I don't think one can put a cache any
more to the southwest in the continental USA . I was in the area
doing other caches when I placed this cache on a whim. Cache is a
plastic bottle. It's on the US side.
Cache consists of a logsheet and a few trinkets. Nothing exciting
other than the claim you can make of having gone to the far end of
the USA to bag a cache.
After hours caching is highly discouraged as it is A) a long
walk (1 1/2 miles)from the closest after-hours parking spot. B) The
Border Patrol will likely enquire as to your motivations. C) Park
is closed after hours. Park is open from 9:00 AM to sunset for
bikes and pedestrians and to cars on weekends only. They have
recently started to charge $5 for cars to enter so I raised the
difficulty, it is still free for walking and bikes.
As of 11/27/07 the cache had been muggled so its now a decon
container. (Note: As of today 3/7/08 there is a small 500' linear
pond covering the road with some very deep chuckholes in the
pavement and I believe that they are not allowing any cars to enter
the park. But if you are on a bike or walking you can avoid this by
heading South at the second sharp turn in the road. This will lead
you to a dirt road up, over and around the water. Where you descend
there is water right at the fence 1' deep, if you want to avoid
that you can then head North on the intersecting dirt road until
your back on the pavement where you can continue West on up to the
monument and the cache. Happy Caching)
