Lawson Peak (formerly Lawson 4) Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

LavaLizard: As there's been no cache to find for months, I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. If you wish to repair/replace the cache sometime in the future, just contact us (by email), and assuming it meets the guidelines, we'll be happy to unarchive it.

Geocache Description:

Starting from the position mentioned in Lawson 1, look across the road and notice the 4x4 trail. This is supposedly Carveacre Road, but don’t waste your time looking for a sign. This one is rated 4.5 for terrain based on the fact that you can make it without gear, but only barely. You will need some upper-body strength to pull yourself up in some places, or a willing accomplice to help out. Elevation is about 3640'.

Update 6 April 2008 Replaced the missing container with a tall, clear Lock & Lock in location I believe was the original cache site. As Tom originally posted, please use care and good judgment in your approach to the summit. There are some very challenging, technical options for those suitably skilled and equipped and one relatively straightforward pitch. -Gecko Dad

WARNINGS!

In addition to the otherwise noted dangers, this is rattlesnake country, and at least one has been encountered by cachers. Be sure you're ready for this.

Several finders have noted that they may not have made it without assistance. Bringing a friend along is usually a good idea on this one, at least the first time.
The Lawson 4
For a history of the Lawson series, see Lawson 1

Lawson 3.5
If you want to see roughly where Lawson 4 was going to be back when we envisioned a 5-cache series, or you just like hanging out on exposed rock faces, find your way to 32 43.560N 116 43.497W. You'll need to squeeze between a couple of boulders. (Big surprise there, eh?)

This Cache
It is possible to rock climb for parts of this, and there are permanent anchor points for that purpose. There is limited “bushwhacking,” in that you will come in contact with actual bushes and may be tempted to whack them. Generally, there is no need to damage the local plant life to reach the cache. If you are not using climbing gear, you will need to do some non-technical climbing. Be very careful.

After you find the cache, continue upwards a few more feet to the very highest point, and claim your bonus: a fantastic view, and a benchmark disk sighting. (Actually, there are 3 disks up here: Lawson 1, Lawson 2, and a triangulation disk. The triangulation disk seems to be the one that counts.)

Not many people make it to the top. Some do, though, so be sure to hide it appropriately.
