I REMEMBER "When"

While going to one of Welch’s Caches today; (“Dead Road Bed Cache”), (GC22CD), as we crossed the area, my mind started wondering and remembering days past…

I was thinking about 60-65+ years back when my Dad bought a used: 1929 or 1930 Model “A” Ford. Back then that was “Thee” car to have.. Of course, “you could have ANY color of car, right off the assembly line, as long as it was black”, according to Mr. Henry Ford. (That was about the only car most people could afford back then, anyway).. When Dad got the car, it needed painted bad. Since he worked at a local lumber yard, where they sold LOTS of different paint, he bought some red and some black paint and a couple of paint brushes. BUT before he painted it, he had to repair the cloth roof as the top was all torn and a couple of the oak cross-braces were broken. Oh, did I say it had wire wheels that badly needed a coat of red paint also???

Anyway, after a lot of “shade-tree” repair, it was ready for the paint. Of course he used the paint brush and put a “coupla coats” on it.. After she dried, he decided to take all four of us kids, “Gramma” Root, and Mom for a ride. “We’d show everyone the “Pride of East 2nd Street”, was ready for the road”. Saturday afternoon Dad and I went to Herm Fuehrer’s Gas Station for gas for our Sunday trip. We put in 5 gallons and it cost Dad “A dollar”!!! “Now, THAT was “Hiway Robbery”, to have to pay a whole dollar for only #@!&^*”, 5 gallons of gas”, Dad said… (He mumbled about it all the way home).. :-)

Sunday morning, Mom packed a picnic lunch in her old “wicker” picnic basket. Put in some plates, (NO paper ones back then), kool-aid for us kids, a mason jar of coffee for Dad, and water for Mom and Gramma Root. Mom had fried up A chicken and got it all ready, for our trip.

Off we headed for the Chain Lakes area by Palo, Iowa. (By gravel roads, IF you were lucky). After leaving Shellsburg, Iowa, we headed for Palo where we crossed over the Chain Lakes/Palo Bridge and found a nice shady spot to sit down and go fishing and to have our picnic. What a wonderful day it was!!! Caught some carp, some bull-heads, and a catfish and then it was dinner time (“dinner” was at “noon” back then, NOT at “supper” time like it is now)... BTW, there were NO GPS’rs, Cd’s, DVD’s, hand-held computer games, boom-boxes, NO noise, there wasn’t even a radio in the car then.. A car back then was for one thing, and one thing ONLY: “going TO and FROM, and nothing more”… “Gas cost a LOT” back then!!!

On our way to home Dad thought he’d “see how she’d do going across the Urbana, Iowa Bridge”. “Yup, I knew she’d make er O.K.” When we left Urbana we got on the gravel road (Hwy. 101)(now Hwy. 150), and headed West & South to Vinton, Iowa (our childhood home)…

Just another addition to this story: While on another trip we were headed for the Buchanan County Fair in Independence, Iowa on the then, Hwy. 101. (“Hiway” was a very loose term back then). The “hiways” were usually “gravel” and “mud”.. Little “gravel” and LOTS of “mud”.. Anyway, we were going to the fair and it got too muddy from the previous night’s rain storm, so Dad decided we’d better not go any further.. He tried to turn around and slid off into the ditch.. Needless to say our trip was an experience we’ll all never forget.. (It took two teams of horses to pull us out of the ditch)..
