Geocache Description:

subtitled 'The Trees that Sound Like a Freeway'.

The cache is not at the posted coordinates, but it is nearby. You will need to use your sense of hearing to solve this simple puzzle and locate this cache. You will also need a phone that plays different keypress tones when you press 1, 2, and 3. Most, but not all, phones will do this. My cellphone works for me.
  • The Puzzle:

Call the Popcorn Lady at 767-2676 (or POPCORN) on your telephone. All Northern California area codes will work. Listen for 60 seconds. There is a special word that marks an event that happens once in that time period. It has 7 letters.

    • E = The position of the letter "A" in the special word. If A is the first letter in the special word, then E=1; if it is the 2nd letter then E=2; etc. If "A" is not in the word, then E=0
    • D = The position of the letter "C" in the special word.

On your singing cell phone, listen to the tones you hear when you press 1, 2, and 3.

    • A = the number in the 2nd row (4,5,6) with the closest pitch to #1
    • C = the number in the 3nd row (7,8,9) with the closest pitch to #2
    • F = the number in the 2nd row (4,5,6) with the closest pitch to #3

Listen to the tones that play when you dial "321-2369" on your cell phone.

    • B = 7 if the tones sound like "Pop Goes The Weasel"
    • B = 8 if the tones sound like "Mary Had A Little Lamb"
    • B = 9 if the tones sound like the beginning of Beethoven's 5th Symphony.
  • The Cache:

    The Cache is located at 37 27.ABC 122 17.DEF

Once you are at this location, you will be surrounded by bushes. If it is windy, you may already know where the cache is located. If it is not windy, the easiest thing to do is to tap the bush branches for an audible clue. The cache is located at the base of the limb in the bush that is holding the audible clue. Please re-hide the cache as well or better than you found it - it should not be visible.

  • The Trees that Sound Like a Freeway:

From the cache, walk back to the trail and then South until you are opposite a group of tall trees to your right. This seems to be the spot where the trees reflect the most sound. They sound like the freeway!
