As the first English settlers came to America in 1607, they were limited to travel by boat or foot. This cache is near the intersection of James and College – not too far from Halfway. It is close to “Archer’s Hope” which was one of the first sites proposed for the colony that was established a little further up river on Jamestown Island.
Please park in one of the established overlooks to avoid a parking ticket and unnecessary attention. Recommend you approach on foot - park near N 37° 13.440' W076° 41.750'. While you might get there by bike, it is better to walk or jog since there isn’t a path. Caution: Industrial Strength bugs and spiders are on your way, USE repellant. You will pass some Civil War trenching on the way to the cache and could probably see several deer on your hike. There is a nice beach near the parking area where you can cool your toes after you hike to and from the stash. With all the car traffic on the Colonial Parkway, please be cautious about entering and exiting the woods – it would be great if you could get off/on the Parkway without being noticed by passing motorists.
Tupperware rectangle contains items the original settlers probably would have appreciated: a thermometer-compass, insect repellant, flashlight, AA Batteries, some Jamestown Quarters, etc.
Also has a camera, please wind it and take a photo after you sign the log.
A special guest (world traveler to be) was placed in the cache – his travels started in Maine and he wants to travel further. I found him in the High and Dry stash in Seashore State Park – Virginia Beach.
1-26-02: I rechecked the cache location this afternoon with my Etrex Venture (took the average of 5 new waypoints). I found a small difference (87 feet) in the coordinates from my original average - you may want to use N 37° 13.777' W076° 42.220'
BONUS: Included in the logbook are coordinates for a bonus cache also near the Parkway – difficulty of 2/2. Best parking for the bonus is at N 37° 13.523' W076° 46.989'. The Bonus also needs to be approached on foot - - - unobserved from the Parkway would be best. This is one area where you shouldn’t take any trash out – I think the Park is surveying the “relics”. You have to wonder how a Chevy Nomad wagon got that far out in the woods.
