Geocache Description:

This cache is at what appears to be a pleasant little park on the North Side of Syracuse, NY. The "park" is in actuality an old cemetary.

The First Ward Cemetery is bordered by Bear Street, Grant Blvd., LeMoyne Ave., and Second North Streets. It now appears to be just a park, as the graves were plowed underground (including the tombstones!) back around the 1920's. (Apparently, a young child was playing in the cemetery, climbed a stone pylon, and it fell over and killed her. Community uproar over the safety of neighborhood children led to the destruction of the cemetery.)
But...
One gravesite remains. A stone bearing the name "Mrs. Gamble" has worked it's way to the surface, and has the distinction of being the oldest marked grave in Syracuse. To claim this cache, email me with the date of Mrs. Gamble's death.
By the way, if you look very closely around this "park," you will see other small traces of the old graveyard. At the base of one tree, there's an iron post-base sticking about four inches out of the ground. Elsewhere, a couple of unmarked stones have also worked their way to the surface via erosion.
Bring a picnic! This is an easy hunt, but also a great place to spend a quiet afternoon.
