Geocache Description:

"We can’t reach old age by another man’s road.”
                         - Mark Twain, at his 70th birthday dinner; 1905

July 31, 2011. This cache is to honor the 70th birthday of our very dear dad, Bob Holmes. We hope your path to find it has been as varied and interesting as the life that inspired us to place it.
From beekeeping to barbershop harmony, gardening to glass-blowing, science fiction to scoutcraft, economics to electronics – Dad taught us the importance of mining life’s nooks and crannies for rare pearls of knowledge and unexpected pleasures, cultivating each to make them bloom into something truly beautiful.
Enjoy gazing at the stars? Why not study astronomy in your spare time – or perhaps grind a homemade mirror to build your own telescope? Like the taste of chardonnay? Plant a vineyard and learn to grow grapes. Get really good at throwing a tomahawk. Build a tall ship of glass. Restore an old fire truck. Create a frog pond! Why settle for doing just what is expected, that which everyone else is doing? Follow the piper you alone can hear (even if it’s a bagpiper!) – and the world may end up a better place for everyone.
Thanks, Dad, for waking us with Sousa music every 4th of July. Thanks for making us work hard in the garden (really). Thanks for the county fairs. Thanks for Star Trek, ice cream breaks and curling matches. Thanks for odd guitar effects and incredible Halloween costumes. Thanks for the dandelion wine.
Above all, thanks for insisting that we keep our eyes open and not miss the opportunities placed before us. We know our occasional side-paths may be the very reason we are on this planet.
Happy birthday to a true adventurer! Can’t wait to see where you go from here!
We love you,
Your kids, Marty, Heidi, Heather, Bekah and Nathan
