Geocache Description:

This cache is located on a rock spire atop Snake Mountain in Holson Valley. It's as remote as it sounds. You'll need to hike quite a ways - probably seven miles, if you do it right - to obtain it.

Falcon Eddy and I hiked the Horsethief Spring trail to place this cache. We started on Talimena Drive at Horsethief Spring, hiked 1.2 miles west on the Ouachita Trail, then took the Horsethief Spring Trail down the mountain, past the Goldville Divide.

The trail was extremely beautiful and we saw numerous animals, including white tail deer. We also saw one bear track, so this is indeed wild country.

The best way to do this is to leave a car at Cedar Lake, then drive up to Horsethief Spring and hike back to the car. The trail is very noticeably blazed with white rectangles, so you'll have no problem following it. You need no special equipment for this, though I would recommend three liters of water and some good boots. The last leg of the journey - up the rock spire - will require some boulder negotiation, but no real climbing. The view is absolutely spectacular. I bet only a handful of humans have ever been here, as this is off the trail on the "scenic route."

Plan wisely and start early. This journey took us five hours to complete and we were really moving. The cache is a medium-sized ammo can full of good gear - a poncho in case it's raining, some wilderness toilet paper, a flashlight in case you're caught out after dark, etc.

This is also the first cache for which I have made a video. If you click the link below, you can watch a short clip of the trail and Falcon Eddy at the cache area. The cache is in plain sight atop the spire because we felt that this is so remote, no one is going to disturb it. Good luck.
