Geocache Description:

Trucks or higher vehicles are recommended for the hill and the washed out gravel road

PLEASE DO NOT take the pictures from the cache.

Canton Beach has changed many times over the years. As a child my family and I swam off the western bluff where there were concrete steps leading down to the beach and we often camped on top of the hill. You can still see the remains of the steps along the beach. As teenagers my husband and I swam on the northern tip where most of the sand had moved, it was a large hill that you nearly had to run or fall down, erosion has taken that beach and many of the trees have fallen. As adults the sand had moved to the eastern inlet and that is where we took our children to swim.

The city of Canton was at one time a very busy city. Before the railroads joined Canton was an important trade port on the Cumberland River known as Boyd's Landing as well as one of the main stops for coach lines for travelers headed north. Canton claimed 5 hotels, a mill, stores, gas station, a post office, 3 schools, a weekly newspaper known as The Yoeman and numerous warehouses for storage of the trade goods. There is evidence of the warehouses by all of the bricks that litter the beach, when the water is low you can see them everywhere. Canton was founded by Abraham Boyd who laid the road Boyd's Landing Rd and built the first hotel known then as the Brick Inn, which still stand and is a private home now known as the Canton Hotel. Canton was started in 1799 but not not offically a town until 1828. The garage still stands on Boyd's Landing road beside the hotel please take the time to stop and look at the old gas pump that stands outside. When Trigg County was formed there was an arguement over Canton or Cadiz being the county seat Canton was at that time in the center of Trigg Co, this of course, was before TVA took over Between the Rivers but Cadiz won out and Canton slowly dimished due to the lack of need for a port and the train being in Cadiz.

For more information about Trigg Co, the Canton Hotel and Canton in general check out this website www.westernkyhistory.org/trigg/kylines/then/canton.html

This is on Army Corp of Engineers property it is not on private property. We have obtained written permission from the Army Corp of Engineers to place this here and have abidded by their stipulations. There is a gentleman who has stopped my family in the past and told us we were not allowed to go to the beach anymore because he owned it. This is not true take the county road over the hill it remains a county road to corp property the road winds around the corp request no ATVs be ridden on there property however you can use your vehicle on the road. The road has washed out many times over the years and it is not paved on the back side of the hill if you have a car or low vehicle I suggest parking at the church and walking over the hill this is a good hike uphill is of course always the worst. Beware of muggles in the summer this is a very popular camping and swimming area also an area where teenagers can be found at night doing what some teenagers do.

You are looking for a tupperware container full of a little bit of everything. There are old pictures placed for you to see PLEASE do not take them I left them to show everyone what Canton looked like before Barkley Lake was flooded. As you will be able to see a lot of Canton is now under water.

Congrat to james.wright31 for being FTF
