Gotanda Station is one of the stations of JR Yamanote line and also a terminal of Tokyu Ikegami Line.
Ikegami cars are up a steep slope from Osaki Hirokoji Station. It marks the ending just beyond at the Yamanote Line. Nowadays, such height of railway like this is not too unusual, and there are a lot of higher buildings around here. However, this line was made at 1928, there ware only wooden houses at that time.
I heard many painters came here to sketch because this line was very queer. (At that time, even the photograph was not popular.)
This route puts on its station where was slightly exceeded over Yamanote line. (Actually, the iron bridge around here ware built at that time and used now.) We think that the station need not be built at such a high position. Why? The answer is this....
There was a plan that this route would extended to Shinagawa direction.(But this plan was interrupted. )
Attention: The container has the "Direction". Be care with when you back.

五反田駅はJR山手線の駅のほかに東急池上線のターミナルでもあります。
JR山手線は２階の高さにあり、東急池上線のプラットフォームは４階にあります。池上線の車両は、隣の大崎広小路駅から急勾配を上ってきて、山手線をわずか越えたところが終点になります。現在はこの線路の回りはビルで囲まれていて、この程度の高さの高架駅はそれほど珍しくはありません。しかし、この線路が建設された1928年当時、あたりは平屋の木造家屋がほとんどでした。(現在使われている鉄橋は、ほぼ当時のままだそうです) 当時はこのプラットフォームは遠くからもとても目立ったようで、多くの画家がこの見慣れぬ風景をスケッチ(写真もまだ一般には普及していないので)しに来たそうです。建設当時、そのような高い場所にこの駅が作られる必要はないようにも思えますが、わざわざこんな高さにホームが作ったのはなぜでしょうか？実はこの路線の建設当時はここはターミナルではなくこのまま品川方面に延伸していく予定があったのだそうです。
