Geocache Description:

All Scouts - boys and girls alike - have to learn about the environment and take part in various community service projects during each level of their Scouting careers. We are combining a "Green-Up" effort with some fun added in. The best part of Scouting is OUTING! - see the child waypoints for the pavilion location.

The clean up effort will be fairly light duty. We are going to trim back some of the flora that is encroaching on the nature trail there as well as pick up any loose sticks and stones in the trail. The event is being promoted in the Vermont Councils of both the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. The goal, as last year, is to team a couple of geocachers with a Scout family to work together in the clean up effort and then head out for a couple of caches (cache sheets will be available at the event).

The Vermont Council for the Boy Scouts of America will be allowing us to use their 12 GPSrs again! Yeah! I will be requiring a Driver's License to swap out a unit for the event. They will all be pre-programmed with the coordinates of the new caches. These need to be manually programmed so if anyone can help with that effort before the event, please let me know. (They are one of the earliest models and do not have an option to electronically program...)

Fees

  • free for kids 6 and under (too young to be Cub Scouts)
  • $2 per person day use
  • $5 per person camping

Geocachers, if you are camping please let me know. There are only 4 lean-tos available - Spruce (stings), Hickory (ChittDirt), Juniper (DJ and CAL), and Walnut (QSeekers). The rest of the lean-tos are reserved for a Boy Scout Troop camping together for that weekend. There is plenty of room for tents and pop-up campers in sites 40-50, 13, 15, 32, 33. 34, and 36. Scouts, if you are camping, you must pre-register through Council. Click here for Park map.

Scouts - dress in your class B (T-shirt) uniforms. Everyone else wear something you don't mind getting dirty. Work gloves, pruning sheers, and insect repellent are highly recommended! (Lavender oil is an all natural alternative.) We have access to several restrooms. If you are not able to come early enough to help with the clean up, come anyway, enjoy lunch, and team up with a Scout family for the afternoon. (Teaming up with a Scouting family is recommended, but not required. Cache only as you are comfortable - no pressure.)

Five new caches are placed in the park. It is not very big, but it is a beautiful location right on Lake Champlain!

This year marks the 100th Anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). The BSA theme this year is "Get Into the Game" based on geocaching. Many states are participating in the Cache to Eagle Series (CTE). Vermont is participating with three geocaches hidden in each of our BSA Districts:

  • Ethan Allen District - Serving Addison, Bennington and Rutland Counties.
  • Calvin Coolidge District - Serving Windsor and Windham Counties.
  • Three Rivers District - Serving Chittenden, Franklin, Grand Isle and Western Lamoille counties.
  • Long Trail District - Serving Orleans, Essex, Caledonia, Washington and Orange Counties.

Each of the 12 geocaches is placed near a local Eagle Project. There are hundreds of Eagle Projects throughout Vermont and we are hoping to showcase more than the 12 that are part of this series.
