This cache is placed to memorialize a military B-47 aircraft crash.
This cache is located near a military aircraft crash site.
On August 22, 1962 a B-47 Bomber was on a
training flight from it's home base at Davis-Monthan AFB in Tucson
to a site near Emmett when one of it's six engines caught fire and
lost altitude. The plane then crashed into a mountain south of
Packer John Lookout and exploded, and some of the flaming debris
started a fire that burned about 5 acres. The three crewmen aboard,
aircraft commander Lt. Col. Raymond N. McDonald 40
of Eldorado, TX, co-pilot Capt. William C Lebbs 30
of Omaha, NB, and navigator Maj. Glen A. McClure
38 of Waverly, IA, were all killed. This team was considered one of
the best bombing teams of Strategic Air Command.
