This accessible trail parrallels the South Branch of the Oconto River. The trail is made up of compacted red granite and boardwalks. There are several areas for fishing. Each fishing area has an animal name. We especially liked OTTER'S SLIDE. We even found a SIGN along the trail with some information about this area. It explains that the South Branch of the Oconto River meanders nearly 50 miles through some of Wiscinsin's largest forests. It joins it's sister river, the North Branch, near Suring and then eventually empties into Green Bay. This river system has been an important transportation route going back to Native Americans and early settlers who transported furs, food, and themselves. It was later used to transport logs during Wisconsin's logging boom in the late 1800's. Today the Oconto River System is important as both a commercial water source and for a variety of recreational opportunities.
The cache is a plastic container with a screw on lid. It has been spray painted to look camouflaged. Inside the container you will find a log book, pencils, and several little wooded pins. Grandpa is a crafter and has donated some of his goods to this cache. Feel free to take a pin and wear it in memory of geocaching fun! There is no need to leave any trade goods. Please be sure to replace the lid securely. ENJOY!
