Geocache Description:

A little known historical Fresno landmark.

PLEASE NOTE: There are SEVEN questions that must be answered to claim a find on this virtual cache.

Welcome to Sierra Sky Park

Sierra Sky Park was established as America's first aviation community, with a sod runway connecting the taxi-ways and the extra-wide streets, this park set the precedent for hundreds of similar communities through out the United States and the world. It would allow avation oriented families to experience the dream of having an aircraft in their own yards and the camaraderie of neighbors with similar dreams.

If you look close at the surrounding homes, they each have an attached airplane hanger in addition to a garage. Pilots who live here literally land their planes, taxi to their homes, and park the planes in their driveway. Pretty cool, huh? ...and Fresno had it first!

Count the white, concrete pipes around this windsock. At the coordinates, you will find a plaque describing the park and telling a bit about the history of it. To log this virtual please email us the answers to the following seven questions:

  1. What date was this park established?
  2. Who established it?
  3. It was transformed into a public use airport from 130 acres of what TWO things?
  4. What date was the plaque set?
  5. What is the number of the Jim Savage chapter that set the plaque?

These next two questions are the most important...

  6. How many large, white sections of concrete pipe make up the circle around the wind sock found about 300 feet west of the plaque?
  7. How many large, white sections of concrete pipe are outside the circle?

Please do not play on or around the concrete pipes or the wind sock! Do your best to count them from the side of the road. It can be done.

(A word of advice: don't take a picture of the pipes and think you can count them later. Many people have tried. All have counted wrong.)

Please do not post your answers here, even if they are encrypted, or we will have to delete them. Thank you.

Please remember: This is a private community. Please be respectful of the property, the homes, the planes, and the owners. It's also imortant to STAY OFF THE RUNWAY!!! Planes land and take off often, and landing planes can be very quiet. If you would like visit the north side of the runway and the rest of the park, you can access it from Brawley Avenue.

PLEASE NOTE:
1 - Log your find and e-mail us the answers at the same time. This way you're not waiting for us to accept your answers to log your find, & we’re not waiting for your answers. This is supposed to be fun, and intended to get you out of the car to show you something you might not see otherwise. We tend to give finders the benefit of the doubt when it comes to the answers, so they don’t have to be perfect. If we have any questions or concerns about your log or answers, we'll let you know.
2 - By way of advice, don’t take a quick picture at the cache locations and expect to be able to read or otherwise extract the needed info from the pics when you get back home. Take a minute to look around and write down your answers while you’re there. “I couldn’t read/interpret/see/understand what was in my pic because it was too dark, too light, too wet, too hot, out of focus, or whatever” is not an acceptable answer.
3 - To claim a find, send us the answers. This is how virtual caches work. We should get a set of answers for every logged find from every Cacher logging a find. Due to some group abuse, we won’t accept group answers.
4 - No answers = No find.
5 - If YOU have questions about the cache, the logging procedure, or suggestions about the cache, don’t hesitate to contact us.
