Geocache Description:

Cache is hidden on Douglas Mountain, a child-friendly hike up to a great view and a stone observation tower at top.

There is a $3 fee for parking for this trail. Take Dyke Moutain Road to Douglas Mountain Road. Douglas Mountain Road goes all the way to the trailhead, but there is no parking allowed there. The parking lot is back down the road off a well marked dirt road called Ledge Road. You can't miss it. From the parking lot it is a 1/4 mile hike on the paved road to trailhead then another 1/4 mile to the top.

4/2/06 - There is a new trail built, the Eagle Scout Trail, that leads directly from the back of the parking area to the top of the mountain. We haven't tried it ourselves, but we have spoken with others who have.

The original trail is on the Douglas Mountain Preserve which is owned and managed by the Town of Sebago. It was donated to the Town by the Nature Conservancy of Maine. The trail closes at 6:00 PM.

There is a fork in the original trail shortly into the hike. You can take either way, both lead to the top. The slightly longer, but less steep and easier WOODS TRAIL is on the right. The LEDGES TRAIL is on the left and is much steeper, but more direct. As its name suggests it goes over several fairly steep exposed rock ledges.

Again, whichever trail you take will lead you up to the summit. We like to take the WOODS TRAIL on the way up and the LEDGES TRAIL on the way down.

At the top of the mountain you'll find the stone tower, built by Dr. William Blackman in 1925. The view from the top of the tower is spectacular! There's also a map at the top that names the various mountains and lakes that you can see from the top of the tower.

At the summit there is also a big boulder with the saying "Non Sibi Sed Omnibus" carved into it in the year 1921. This phrase translates to "Not for One, But for All" in English.

On 4/2/06 we replaced the original container with a large ammo box. Originally, the cache was in a standard 4 liter clear plastic Rubbermaid with a blue rubber seal around the top.

Enjoy the views and the cache!

Please remember to Cache In and Trash Out!
