Geocache Description:

This part of Chippewa County, near the Chippewa Moraine State Recreation Area, is crisscrossed with multi-use trails. There are trails here for just about any outdoor activity you can think of. Hiking, ATVing, biking, cross country skiing, snowmobiling, snow shoeing, horseback riding and, most importantly, geocaching all have places here. Some of these trails are actually gravel roads and are accessible by car or truck. This allows for those times when a leisurely drive in the country is what's called for.

There are a lot of caches in this area that require some pretty good hikes to get to. The CMTD (Chippewa Moraine Trails Drive) is a series of "country style" park 'n grabs either right off the road or a short walk down a trail leading from it. There should be no more than 100' of bushwhacking and no more than a couple of hundred feet of walking involved for each cache.

Be aware that the roads are well established and are generally well suited for auto use but can become quite soft and muddy in spots in the spring and after periods of rain.

CMTD -1 is a series of caches starting on the south side of Townline Lake and heading south on O'Neil Creek and Hickory Ridge Trails. You can access it by turning south off of County M either at 144th St or at 160th St.

While you're in the area, be sure to visit the David R. Obey Ice Age Interpretive Center 7 miles east of New Auburn and 1.9 miles east of State Highway 40 on County Highway M. Here you can to learn about the fascinating geology and natural history of this beautiful area. It's a great place to take the kids.
