Obama was educated from 5th through 12th grades (1971-1979) at
Punahou School, a coeducational college prep school. (He was
admitted through scholarship.)
Punahou is the largest private school in the U.S. and it boasts
one of the top-ranked athletic programs in the country. Obama's
varsity basketball team took the state championship in 1979.
Obama has often said that this school profoundly affected his
life by teaching him to work hard and strive for excellence.
However, Obama's family, friends and teachers seem to agree that
"Barry's" happiest moments at Punahou were spent on the basketball
court.
Note: Punahou School is located diagonally across the
street from this park. Unauthorized visits to the campus are
forbidden.
