Geocache Description:

This cache is not only hidden in beautiful coastal surrounds it also shows that industry & nature can co-exist

This is a very interesting but little known, part of the Great South West Walk. This section, the Smelter Nature Walk, which can be accessed from car parks at either end was constructed in 1989 to help disabled people enjoy the wonderful scenery this vicinity has to offer. From the cache site you can observe nearby Lawrence Rocks, the home to Australia’s largest Australian Gannet colony. In 1995 overcrowding caused a spill over of nesting sites on to the main land. Foxes, cats and ravens took their toll but with the help of a vermin proof fence the birds persisted and are now well established. This is Australia’s only mainland colony. The cache is a one litre screw top container. The contents follow the coastal theme with an assorted variety of sea creatures. A logbook, pen & stash note are also included.Bring along your binoculars.
