Nog alle dagen vindt men in de Westhoek nog oude bommen.
De nieuwe ontmanteling fabriek in Houthulst die vanaf 1999 in gebruik is, is bij
lange na niet opgewassen tegen de immense taak.
Sinds de nieuwe fabriek, gelegen in het bos Houthulst in gebruik is konden de
ontmijners gemiddeld niet meer dan twintig gasgranaten per dag onschadelijk
maken. Dat is een gevolg van de werkwijze die noodgedwongen voorzichtig en
daardoor langzaam moet zijn. En omdat de fabriek vaak moet worden ontsmet, kan
zij hooguit 180 dagen per jaar in bedrijf zijn, zo heeft het Belgische
Ministerie van Defensie meegedeeld. De voorraad gifgasgranaten, die in Houthulst
ligt opgeslagen, is inmiddels gegroeid tot meer dan twintigduizend projectielen,
meer dan 250.000 kilo. Elk jaar komen daar 1.000 tot 1.400 gasgranaten bij, die
nog altijd bij het ploegen en andere werkzaamheden in West-Vlaanderen uit de
grond komen.
In dit veld heeft men een boom geplant om de arme boer te herdenken en zijn
noodlottig ongeval, nadat hij met zijn tractor op een mijn was gereden. Deze
boom staat aan de andere kant van de weg (in het veld) t.o.v. het eerste
waypoint.

The new dismantling plant in Houthulst, in use since 1999, is not able to cope
with this enormous workload. Since the new plant, situated in the woods of
Houthulst, is in service, the people from the bomb disposal squad could only
dismantle in average 20 gas grenades per day. This is due to the working method,
which is necessarily very careful. Because the plant needs to be disinfected
regularly, it can only stay in operation for about 180 days a year, as was told
by the Belgian Ministry of Defence. The stock of poison gas grenades stored in
Houthulst has grown in the mean time to over 20 000 projectiles, so over 250 000
kg. Each year, the amount grows with 1000 to 1400 gas grenades that are ploughed
up from the West Flanders soil.
In this field, people have planted a tree to remember the
unfortunate farmer and his fatal accident, after he hit a mine with his tractor.
