Geocache Description:

Should be an easy find for most Congratulations to blackbolt729 for FTF !

Proposed by George Washington to improve transportation & further develop the Eastern PA region, the Union Canal, linking the Susquehanna River south of Harrisburg to the Schuylkill River in Reading, was completed in 1828. Although the Union canal was for a time a vital means of moving coal & lumber towards Philadelphia, it was soon deemed too narrow for the newer larger barges and had to be enlarged. Ongoing financial problems, costly storm related repairs, and competition from expanding railroad lines, brought the demise of the Union Canal by 1881. This cache is located in the area of Lock 24 of the Union Canal on the Tulpehocken Creek. While most of the 80 mile canal with it's 100 locks is long gone, here is a rare spot where you can still see a 3 arch bridge, the tow path where the mules walked to pull the barges alongside the creek, and even one of the few surviving Lockmaster's homes. (The small brick lockmaster's home is private property, so please no trespassing! ) There is no parking directly at GZ. Please park along the road past the SOUTH end of the bridge. There is little traffic, but some folks do seem to think it's a road race course, so do stay alert for motor vehicles (& horses). Also, you may want to avoid this on on the first day of trout season - the creek is stocked with trout (you may see a few jumping) & is quite popular for fishing. Please bring your own pen. Small token of appreciation for FTF. We hope you enjoy this historic area - & our 1st. cache!

NOTE: Cache had to be relocated and container changed. Coordinates have been adjusted. New location is very nearby original, and cache should be a C&D, except it may not be accessible in snow.
