Geocache Description:

The time has come to reveal that space travel for wizards has finally been accomplished. The wizards amongst you should have no trouble locating this one! You muggles are looking for a medium sized portkey in the shape of an asteroid at the Wizarding World’s First Portkey Destination in Outer Space.

The Ministry of Magic’s Department of Magical Transportation, in conjunction with the Department of Mysteries, has been working tirelessly to develop wizarding space technology. After significant research and testing on all of the primary modes of wizard transportation - Apparition, Floo Networks, Flying, Vanishing Cabinets, etc., we are happy to reveal that it is finally possible for wizards to travel in space. And because we know that some geocachers believe themselves to be non-muggle folk, we thought we would share this one with you.

Before our success in the creation of both portkey destinations and portkeys themselves in the wide expanse of the universe we tested multiple other possibilities for travel beyond the Earth’s atmosphere. With only a few casualties along the way, we are excited to reveal that travel via portkey will be the wizarding world’s path to the greater universe.

Almost any inanimate object can be turned into a Portkey with the simple incantation of “Portus”. Once bewitched, the object will transport anyone who grasps it to a pre-arranged destination. Portkeys in space do not actually travel with the wizard to their final destination but rather, they stay in space at their original coordinates so that other wizards may use the same portkey to return to Earth. Unfortunately, portkeys in space will only transport wizards - not muggles. Because of this, non wizard geocachers can feel free to find the portkey, touch it, and sign the logbook without fear of being unexpectedly transported back to Earth.
