Our family has always been interested in trains and in recent years geocaching. So we decided to combine the two for a series of caches. In addition to driving, hiking, biking, or paddling to caches, it is now possible to take the train! All aboard!
The Cape May Seashore Lines (CMSL) is a short line railroad, rich in history that runs here in south Jersey. This line was known as the “Steel Speedway to the Shore” when trains were in their heyday. Recently, after years in which the tracks laid dormant, service has been restored, and it is possible to take several different excursions on the CMSL. The services are limited, schedules and fares can be checked at (visit link) One popular outing is the thirty mile round trip between Richland and Tuckahoe. The railroad also holds special events such as wine tasting runs and the Santa Express.
This cache can be found in Saw Mill Park located in Richland Village, just a short walk from the Richland RR station. Richland Village has undergone major revitalization recently and is a quaint charming area with a railroad theme.
Saw Mill Park holds a special place in our family’s affection for it was our grandfather who established and owned the saw mill here. The revitalized park features a caboose and small train themed playground for children. This is a beautiful spot to sit and imagine what life was like in days gone by. This is a small cache container with only a log sheet and a pencil.
