Abingdon is often referred to as the oldest continually inhabited town in Britain.  The Market Square has been used to hold markets and fairs for many hundreds of years.  It is also used for many other events, such as the strange 'bun throwing' celebrations, where local dignitaries throw dried buns at the crowd below, there's plenty of information on Abingdon on the Wikipedia page here.
The Square is in the centre of Abingdon. Since the repaving of the Square and the addition of coffee shops, the area is usually busy with people. Please let me know if the paper is getting low.
Bun throwing photos from April 29th 2011 for William and Kate. 4000 buns where thrown from the top of the county hall museum, but this time from a platform on the scaffolding as it is undergoing a 3.5 million pound upgrade. This was the 32nd bun throwing and dates back to the coronation of George 3rd in 1761. The Mayor Duncan Brown estimated about 5000 people and it as generally accepted that it was the largest crowd in living memory. Some buns had the couples inititals on them, but not the 4 buns I had seen. our family got 3. The next is due to take place to celebrate the Queens Diamond Jubilee. The buns where baked the night before at Millet's farm that is not that far away and is worth a visit, in the summer season the have a maze made of maize and other activities including the pick your own, play area with childrens farm.
Nice view of downtown is here. I found on photos at the bottom of google streetview when checking another cache of mine. The stert stream one. here.
