Asian Tsunami Memorial Cache - UK Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Bryan: In keeping with Groundspeak’s policy of not permitting charity caches or caches that promote agendas or platforms, effective immediately, the two caches created recently for the purpose of collecting money for Tsunami/Earth quake victims have been archived.

Our hearts go out to the victims of this terrible tragedy. However, although we understand that these caches were created with the best of intentions; the uproar from within the community regarding these caches has reinforced our position.

Questions like, “Why can’t I do a cache for my charity?” or “I don't like this organization, why can’t we create a Tsunami cache for a different organization” make a couple of things clear.

First, we do not want to have to admit/deny caches based upon our perceived merits of the specific agenda, position, organization or charitable cause. Most opinions vary when it comes to issues like these and we have no interest in hosting the battleground or becoming an arbiter.

Second, this web site is about geocaching and we do not wish to see it converted to a platform for issues, whether good, bad or otherwise.

There are plenty of ways to donate to charity and plenty of ways to help out. We encourage you to find them and participate to the extent you believe it is right. We certainly do.

Now, I realize that this post and action will most likely cause another uproar. Personally, I am sorry that we did not enforce this guideline sooner. The blame for this lies solely with Groundspeak and not the volunteers. As far as this web site is concerned, we plan to do our best to keep it related to geocaching and we hope you like it.

Sincerely,

Rothstafari

Geocache Description:

The most important cache you will ever visit.

On the 26th December 2004, an earthquake measuring 8.9 on the Richter Scale struck in the Indian Ocean, west of the coast of Indonesia. This resulted in a massive tsunami which caused absolute devastation and massive loss of life in Indonesia, Thailand, India, Sri Lanka, The Maldives, Malaysia, Burma, Bangladesh and Somalia. Millions upon millions have had their lives effected and help is urgently needed.

There are hundreds of thousands of people who enjoy the sport of geocaching worldwide. I have created this cache as it's vitally important that as many people as possible do what they can to help. Our sport is reliant on the beauty and variation of our small planet, yet it is that same planet which inevitably holds power over us all.

This cache is hidden close to the headquarters of the UK Disasters Emergency Committee, an agency which oversees the collection of charitable donations for 12 international charities, including Oxfam, Save The Children and the British Red Cross. It is a Breath Strip container painted black and held in place by a magnet. You'll need to bring your own pen. It is situated by a small grassed area which, although private, is open to the public occasionally. You do NOT need to go into the gardens to retrieve the cache.

While the charity are pleased to be associated with this cache they have asked that you do not try and visit them as, quite understandably, they are extremely busy. They have also asked that should anybody want to make a donation after finding this cache (or even after a DNF) you should find a bank or post office as they cannot accept donations at the office. The nearest Post Office (and the one DEC use) is at N51°31.048', W0°08.467' on the corner of Portland Place and Mortimer Street. Please give what you can afford (the smallest donation may save someone's life) or alternatively, please spread the word to as many people as you can.

Thank you for reading this. You can also donate at the Disaster's Emergency Committee link below or follow the link to the BBC website where you will find a list of other charities involved in the relief work. Please feel free to add links to other charitable organisations in your cache logs.
