High in the hills of the Rancho Corral de Tierra conservation lands is PALO; a 3/4-inch stainless steel plug, set in bedrock. (How exciting!)
Anyhow…PALO is, or was, a station mark used in GPS studies of crustal deformation in the Bay Area (visit link) and PALO was one of the many stations in the region to provide evidence that this area is, in fact, moving…slowly, inexorably, toward the northwest at a rate of about 4 centimeters per year…But PALO is elusive, and unlike it’s coastside cousins, FATE and WHAL, which are obvious…I can’t find PALO.
Was PALO pulled by the surveyors; was PALO destroyed; or is PALO just hiding? Whatever the case, getting up there is the fun part as you follow well-worn paths through the chaparral of Rancho Corral de Tierra. Enjoy your surroundings!
And while you're up there...See if you can find PALO!
BEWARE: poison oak and wildlife of the chaparral; including everything from woodrats to mountain lions.
(( It's about 2 miles one-way with a 1200-foot elevation gain and very little shade...BRING WATER to enjoy under shady trees near the top ))
* * * * * You could bust straight up the hill, but the long way around is much more enjoyable :-)
