Geocache Description:

Directions: Whitworth Hall is 1½ miles north-west of Spennymoor, Co Durham on a minor road between A690 (Brancepeth) and A688.

*~*~*~*This is a Queeny and Princess Freya Cache!*~*~*~*Nice easy one for kids ;) This is set beside Whitworth Hall on the Public Footpath that runs directly on the right, beside the Park’s main entrance gates. This is to stop the animals eating the cache! Park inside on the right and walk back out ;) Entry to the Park and parking is free. It’s open from 10.30-11pm daily! Find the cache and then go back in for the walk around! Whitworth Hall (1183), once famously owned by Robert Shafto. He held the family estate for 55 years from 1742-1797. He is buried in the church nearby. Aged 30, Robert was elected M.P. for Durham City and the ballad ‘Bonnie Bobby Shafto’ was probably an electioneering song! The popularity of the tune persisted and other verses added when his grandson Robert Duncombe Shafto successfully campaigned in the 1861 election, also as M.P. for Durham.Bobby Shafto’s gone to sea,Silver Buckles on his knee, He’ll come back to marry me, Bonnie Bobby Shafto. Today Whitworth is a Hotel and Country Park, and there's a family friendly Pub in the grounds. There is a large lake to walk around with swans and ducks and also a woodland dene and Victorian walled garden. The main attraction is a 73 acre Deer Park, with free roaming Red and Fallow deer that you can hand feed! Food for them can be bought at the pub for 50p a bag. You must stick to the footpaths. The GPS readings at this place were variable for some reason and we gave the best co-ords after a week of observations. ***Please take the clue just in case!***Why not try Brawn's Peth (GCJ67C) after Shafto's House, for a beautiful view of a castle through the trees!Cache Contents: Log Book, Stashnote, Swaps.
