The WDFW has
purchased 80 acres the mouth of Tarboo creek. Lower Tarboo Creek is
a rare example of an undeveloped lower river floodplain in
Washington. The lower river and adjoining tributaries, side
channels, wetlands, Sitka Spruce groves, cedar, and fir forest and
Dabob Bay shoreline provide excellent habitat for at-risk salmon
stocks and priority wildlife species. According to the WDFW web
site the purchase to "protect high quality stream and riparian
habitat for salmon and wildlife and to protect the Tarboo-Dabob
Bay’s water quality. It includes both conifer and deciduous forests
and supports protected species such as bald eagle, northern spotted
owl and marbled murrelet". |

The cache has a rating of 4 for
terrain only because you need to walk over all this wood debris
tossed up by winter storms. |
|
Parking is a
small pull out as soon as to get to the bay. There is a slightly
larger pull out on the opposite side of the road. Would recommend
boots. The logs you need to cross might be slick even in the summer
months. Cache is easy to to find. The plug we used to cover it is
not only to hopefully keep the muggles from finding it but also to
help keep the cache from being washed out during winter storm
surges. |

November 1 by Bigawop (1026 found) Needed good boots and walking-stick. The terrain was wet and slppery. Calks would have been great. TFTH
[view this log] | November 1 by woppawife (1026 found) We didn't do this one once before when in the area because of the possibility of having to walk across those wobbly, slick logs. We got there, the tide was a ways out and headed across to clot of logs. Both of had walking sticks to stabilize us. Bigawops legs are longer so he made it there first (was I reluctant on purpose??). He made the find and we headed back to the parked vehicle more to the edge of the logs. That worked much better. Very nice job by you and the boys but, wow, I know now where all of the lost tennis shoes go. Very good job guys. TFTC
[view this log] | June 22 by tytlers (5 found) This was our first search and we left stumped. We returned 2 days later and found it. Thanks!
[view this log] | June 22 by brewman65 (5334 found) That is a very impressive collection.
[view this log] | June 1 by frisbee'r (9030 found) The trip in went pretty smooth. One has to wonder how many years and circumstances it's taken to assemble this vast field of bleached logs. It makes sense to place a container out this far as a challenge. Thank you, thank you for spot on coords.
[view this log] | June 1 by Hoppingcrow (2672 found) Frisbee'r and I are no strangers to this type of terrain. One of my favorite places to fish is pretty well surrounded with driftwood. You pick the big, long ones, and always keep your eyes ahead and plann your route as you go. Only once or twice did we have to step off onto beds of the smaller stuff. (2060)

[view this log] | March 10 by pcakes (2538 found) I don't think I've seen so much driftwood concentrated in one place before. It was actually easier to walk on than I had thought. Found the cache pretty quickly once I got there. TFTH!
[view this log] | February 19 by captsteiny (4146 found) What initially looked like a very dicey walk actually turned out to be fun! Of course we used our trusty walking sticks and that made all the difference. Nice hide too that the gizmo took us right to. Thanks for a fun experience at a beautiful area! SL.
[view this log] | December 6, 2008 by Kiyojohn (1816 found) Over 1000 feet of drift wood (round trip). 1500 if you count all the zig zagging I did during the adventure. Like "Water Dreaming Woman" mentioned, I also started with the "balance beam" method. It works in some places, but not all. I grabbed a good walking stick (plenty to chose from) which helped a lot! No broken legs today! At one point, on my return trip, my leg fell about a foot and a half, through some weak logs, but the only cracking noises came from the wood (not my femer)! My wife waited on the roadside and watched with cell phone in hand, so she could call 911 if I fell and started to bleed to death from the compound fracture. She snapped a few pics! It wasn't that bad! Get a walking stick, take your time and be careful! Thanks for a fun little challenge, guys! Nice hide. JnK

| November 23, 2008 by Water Dreaming Woman (569 found) Started out doing the Olympic style, slippery balance beam act with Euniek, which took a lot of courage. After about 25 yards, I decided to use another safer approach, although that one was also quite sloppy in a different way. What a sense of accomplishment when we walked out unscathed, with a smiley on the map and on our faces. We are enjoying the educational series. Thanks Bogey Boys & Astro.
[view this log] | November 23, 2008 by euniek (572 found) Do fishermen really traverse this log littered field just to get the the creek? Or...did we miss the "easy" path? Fortunately, most of the logs were dry and we found the cache unscathed! We are enjoying your salmon estuary series. Thanks for bringing us here.
[view this log] | November 15, 2008 by dontybarty (79 found) sent son out to get this one but he couldnt find it. so off i go and i really didnt want to, but made it there and found it right off. be careful i did see some boards with some rusty old nails in them mixed in with all thoughs logs.
[view this log] | November 9, 2008 by The Pirates of the Yukon (1333 found) Yarr, the old pirate with company, found our way down South to locate this one, a nice well hidden but relatively easy hide, but a very slick and rather tricky approach over about 100 yards of logs and debris, use caution , probably not advised for small children or very young pirates, Saw salmon trying to spawn in the nearby creek. Like this new Salmon Creek series of hides as this makes our 2nd FTF in a week. TFTC
