In 1998 zijn corporaties, gemeente, instellingen en bewoners gestart met wijkvernieuwing in Groningen; het verbeteren van woningen en de woonomgeving. Vooral in de naoorlogse wijken in de stad. Wijkvernieuwing zorgt ervoor dat een wijk prettig leefbaar blijft. Bijvoorbeeld door renovatie, nieuwbouw of het opnieuw inrichten van de openbare ruimte. Maar ook door maatregelen die leiden tot meer veiligheid en een aangename sfeer in de wijk. In de Nieuw Indische Buurtonderdeel van de Korrewegwijk- werkt Lefier sinds 2005 aan wijkvernieuwing.
De Gordel van Smaragd is de naam voor de nieuwbouw aan de Medanstraat, Bandoengstsraat, Palembangstraat, Timorstraat en Molukkenstraat in de Nieuw Indische Buurt. De nieuwbouw is verdeeld in vier fasen. Fasen 1 t/m 3 zijn inmiddels gerealiseerd. De vierde fase omvat de nieuwbouw aan de Molukkenstraat. Deze laatste fase is nog in ontwikkeling.
De Nieuw Indische Buurt is onderdeel van het vroegere uitbreidingsplan van de bekende architect Berlage. Zijn stijl kenmerkte zich onder meer door ‘gesloten’ bouwblokken. Zo’n bouwblok is ook op de hoeken en op de kopse kanten bebouwd. Ook de ‘Groningse’ rode baksteen en de verbijzondering van de hoeken zijn specifiek voor de Berlagestijl; sober en ingetogen. Om de nieuwbouw mooi aan te laten sluiten op de bestaande omgeving is ook het totale nieuwbouwplan één groot ‘gesloten’ bouwblok. Enerzijds vormen de Bandoeng en de Timorstraat de randen van het bouwblok, anderzijds de Palembang en Molukkenstraat. De randen hebben een strakke uitstraling. Aan de Molukken en de Palembangstraat zijn de woningen ook hoger; 4 en 5 bouwlagen. Middenin het bouwblok loopt de Medanstraat. Dit wordt een hofje met gemoedelijke, vriendelijke sfeer. Zo ontstaat een nieuw stukje Nieuw Indische Buurt dat de samenhang met de rest van de buurt vergroot.
Deze buurt, gelegen tussen de Floresstraat/Floresplein en het Molukkenplantsoen, bestaat grotendeels uit huurwoningen. De huurwoningen zijn vrijwel allen vroeg naoorlogs, de particuliere woningen zijn voornamelijk uit de jaren dertig. In de afgelopen jaren is ook in deze buurt wijkvernieuwing toegepast. In de Timorstraat en de Medanstraat zijn woningen gesloopt, terwijl in andere straten de (huur)woningen zijn gerenoveerd.
