Geocache Description:

Come and participate in the first International EarthCache Day - 1pm - 2pm.

Come and join the EarthCache team from the Geological Society of America, in association with Groundspeak Inc., the American Geological Institute and the National Park Service in celebrating the exciting educational geocaching tool of EarthCaching at this premier event being held on the Mall in Washington DC.

EarthCaches are a very special form of educational geocache which take geocachers to locations and teach them about some fascinating aspect of our Earth. While EarthCaches follow all the same principles and guidelines of geocaching, they have additional guidelines that developers must follow to ensure that the EarthCache provides real and valuable lessons to those who visit them. These guidelines can be found at www.earthcache.org.

This event will give you an opportunity to see how EarthCaches are developed and allow you to speak to the approvers about your ideas about potential EarthCaches. You can also find out about the EarthCache Masters pin program…and receive your own white EarthCache Masters pin for just attending!

Other EarthCache Events are being held on this same day in other states and countries. Currently there are 550+ EarthCaches located in 27 countries and growing rapidly – which alone is something worthy to celebrate.

This special event is also being held on the first day of Earth Science Week (ESW). ESW is a special time in which the nation celebrates the importance of the Earth to our every day lives. So it is fitting that this event coincides with and is being celebrated at the first event for ESW this year.

Activites
As well as meeting the EarthCache team, participants will hear from Dr. Greg Forbes, the Severe Weather Expert of the Weather Channel then followed by talks on the effect of weather on the Washington Monument and other materials. We will then talk about how we could develop an EarthCache based on the Washington Monument.

Participants will then be encouraged to get involved in some hands-on activities as well sharing ideas and stories about their geocaching experience. Travel bugs and geocoins could also be exchanged with other participants (so please remember to bring them along).

After the event, you might like to try your hand at finding and logging geocaches and waymarks in the very close vicinity.

We hope you can join us at this fun, educational and exciting event.

PS. This event has been officially approved by the National Park Service to be held at this location.
