Geocache Description:

2004 Anza-Borrego Desert Cache-a-thon

February 21st - 22nd, 2004

Notice: This "event" is only the meetup and possible camping at Arroyo Salado. Officially, only a 5 minute meeting at 9 am on Saturday is "organized". All other activites are the decision and responsibility of the individuals. Any group or groups travelling together during the day is formed only for the purpose of safety and appreciation of the desert.

This geocaching event will provide information on geocaching opportunities in California's largest, and perhaps most beautiful, state park. You might see Indian pictographs, ancient village sites, desert palm oases, deep stratified arroyos, breathtaking badlands, seemingly endless mud caves, desert vegetation and fauna, and magnificent vistas.

Location:

Official meeting on Saturday will take place at 9:00 am at the Arroyo Salado camping area, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park off County Highway S-22. Topo Map of Arroyo Salado.

Camping: Free primitive camping is available at the Arroyo Salado area.  Camping may also be available at public and private campgrounds. You will need to make your own arrangements.  List of campsites in ABDSP.   Also, check out the last cache tour for more camping options.

Needed Items: Bring lots of water! Hydrate yourself continuously, even before the trip. You will drink from one to two gallons per day in the desert, just for hiking and caching. You will need more for other uses.
14 Essential Items for Hiking

Vehicles: For many of the areas you may visit, you will need a high clearance vehicle. 4WD is helpful, but not essential. There is some soft sand in the washes, so stay with a group, and if you get stuck there will be other vehicles to strap you out. Normal passenger vehicles should really only be driven on the paved highways and graded dirt roads within the campground.

Gasoline: The closest gas station to Arroyo Salado is in Borrego Springs. You will need to have as full a tank as possible, as there is no gas along the S-22 highway.

Communication: Drivers should try to have an FRS radio with them in the vehicle, and preferably while hiking as well. The radio channel will be set on Saturday morning, but the tentative channel is Channel 10. The radio will assist groups in giving directions while driving, and finding individuals if they get lost.
