The Second Annual Great Chaparral Trail Event at the Audi Murphy Trailhead in Farmersville, Texas


 
Last years event was a great success so Farmersville has invited us back.
Once again we will hold the event in coordination with the Farmers and Fleas Market at the Trail Head.

CITO Event: One Day Caching and CITO Event

Evening Event: Daddy-O's Diner on the Square at 6:00 PM 

Date: March 6th

Starting Location: The trailhead is located downtown Farmersville (Audie Murphy Trailhead)

Trailhead Coordinates: N 33 09.724  W 096 21.588

Directions: To get to Farmersville you will head east out of Dallas on I-30, then on the other side of Lake Ray Hubbard you will turn left or north on Ridge Road then travel north through Rockwall until you dead-end into 78 then turn right travel north on 78 until you reach Farmersville. Turn right onto Farmersville Pkwy crossing Main St. right into the trailhead.

Time: You can start anytime, however the official start time is 9 AM Saturday

Food: There will be donuts and coffee Saturday A.M.

Saturday night Event: We will be meeting at DADDY-O'S DINER (this is a 1950 style diner on the square at 6:00 P.M.  The square is just north of the trailhead.  When you sign in Saturday morning please let us know if you will be attending as we will need to notify the manager how many will be eating.

Prizes: To be given away including Coins and other great stuff from Garmin and other sponsors.

Goal: The Cache in Trash Out Event consists of 2.5 miles of concrete trails heading north from the Farmersville trailhead.  There are caches along the way.
There will be two pick up points along the trail for the CITO event.
The first pickup point coordinates: N 33 10.688  W 096 20.245  On Murchison Street
The end of the trail pickup point coordinates: N 33 11.073  W 096 17.612   On CR 1122


Trash bags will be picked up where the streets cross the trail.  If you will leave your bags at these points we will pick them up and take them to a dumpster designated by Paula at the Farmersville City Hall.

Purpose: Cache In Trash Out (CITO), Geocaching and Meet-up Event at a local restaurant Saturday evening  to meet fellow cachers, trade stories and travel bug/coins at approximately 6PM

When you arrive: At the trailhead please sign in at the tent, get your packet, bags and sign up for the event diner event. 

Maps and other information regarding the trail will be available.

Parking: There is a Flea Market going on at the same time as our event, however there is plenty of parking close by.

Accessibility: This event will be a fun and safe event for all ages.  The 2.5 mile concrete trail is wheelchair accessible but getting to the caches is not.

Walking and biking is permitted on the trail only. NO motorized vehicles are allowed.

For those caching beyond the 2.5 mile concrete trail:
Distance:
Approximately 30 miles from Farmersville to Ladonia following the trail.

There are approximately 185 caches along the trail from Farmersville all the way to Ladonia.
If you plan to cache further than the 2.5 miles concrete trail I will have maps of the trail available at the trailhead.  The map will include exit points along the trail with distances between the exit points and also from the trailhead.

We recommend that you bring a bike if you plan to cache beyond the 2.5 mile concrete trail.

If you plan to cache a large portion of the trail we recommend you have someone to pick you up along the trail or arrange transportation. If you don't have a driver to pick you up we will have communication with several people who will be able to pickup and drop off people where and when the need arises. So please make arrangements with the drivers where and when you need to exit the trail as we would like to be back at the trailhead by 6:00 PM
Remember to plan ahead if you are attending the meet-up event Saturday at 6:00.

Bring plenty of water and food if you plan to stay on the trail for long periods of time.  We encourage you to travel in groups for safety and arrange transportation back to the trailhead.

Restrooms are available at the Audie Murphy Trailhead in Farmersville.

Facilities in towns along the trail:
Merit: Limited (There is a feed store on the main street just to the left of the trail)
Celeste
: Convenience Store and Gas next to the trail
Wolfe City
: Cafe across the street from Exit Point #20

Other opportunities along the trail:
1. Texas County Challenge - the trail covers 3 counties (Collin, Fannin and Hunt)
2. ABC Challenge - North of Wolf City along the trail you can get the entire alphabet (including a bonus cache)

Volunteers Needed:

  • Transportation of cachers from spot to spot as needed.  (Volunteer Drivers to pickup cachers at designated points along the trail where roads intersect the trail then take them back to the trailhead.

What is a CITO event?

 

 

The Chaparral Trail is a Rails-to-Trails project. Eventually it will stretch from Farmersville Texas to Paris Texas.

  • Trail End Points: Farmersville to Paris
  • Counties: Collin, Fannin, Hunt
  • Trail Length: 56.5 miles  (Caches to Ladonia approximately 30.3 miles)
  • Trail Surfaces: Packed Soil, Crushed Stone. The first 2.5 miles from Farmersville is concrete and pavement.
  • Trail Activities: Walk, Horseback, Mountain Bike.
